Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Junior Eurovision Song Contest

Junior Eurovision Song Contest has been created in 2003 by the EBU, based on the model of the worldwide famous Eurovision Song Contest.

As its big brother, the "JESC" (as called by fans) final generates unforgettable television moments. Like any TV production, last year edition has been impacted by Covid crisis. In order to reduce the disease transmission risk, the competing performances broadcasted during the 2020 final were recorded in each country. But to keep the Live spirit of the event, they were all recorded with a strict set of rules.

"Live on Tape" production rules.

"Live on Tape" refers to a time the young JESC artists may not know, when video was recorded on a magnetic tape held in a cassette. Tapes and cassettes have disappeared with digitization, but the expression "Live on Tape" to refer to a "video recorded in live conditions" remained in many TV control rooms.

For JESC 2020, all "Live on Tape" song performances had been recorded with the following rules:

  • Main vocals sung live. Backing vocals could be pre-recorded.
  • No editing at all, the clip was recorded in one piece.
  • All recording had to be done in a 60-minute session max.
  • No more than 3 takes during this hour.
  • Rehearsals were allowed only during one morning.

Constraints revealed the best of LiveEdit

Tight constraints are often a good indicator to reveal systems value. The low number of takes, and the short time allowed to record them gave LiveEdit a perfect opportunity to demonstrate its efficiency:

  • Timecode was generated by LiveEdit, synchronizing all the devices present in the Millenium Signature 11 from AMP VISUAL TV.
  • LiveEdit controlled the Sony MVS7000-X switcher via native IP protocol.
  • The huge video wall on stage was fed directly by LiveEdit Producer Max Media Player in UHD.
  • Different audio tracks were all played by LiveEdit : Backing track, click track and backing vocals, Valentina singing live during all takes.
  • Each take was recorded both on an XT server and by LiveEdit, the LiveEdit recording being used for review.
  • The LiveEdit Review being immediately available, the technical and artistic teams could very quickly work on it. Between each take, some camera framing were modified, the choreography was adjusted, video effects were aligned, in order to reach perfection.
  • Finally take number 2 has been selected and sent to Warsaw to compete and win!

Once again LiveEdit' motto "make your productions as qualitative as post-produced ones" took on its full meaning.
