LiveEdit at Melodifestivalen

LiveEdit team is proud of having contributed to this success, by having given the two directors the tools to reach that level of creativity and excellence. You want to see an example of it? Look at the winning song below at 2:33, and see how the singer is magically teleported by simultaneously removing an effect, cutting a camera and changing the light - perfectly in sync thanks to LiveEdit control.

Creative director: Sacha Jean-Baptiste

“LiveEdit X makes the workflow a breeze.”

The best persons to speak about the creative process are for sure the two directors:

“The work with LiveEdit does not start and stop at the studio’s door, we have been preparing and reviewing each song from home, at the hotel, in office.” explains Robin Hofwander ;
while Fredrik Bäcklund explains “After using the LiveEdit X in production I can honestly say it is the most powerful show controller out there. LiveEdit X is more powerful, easy to use and an extremely intuitive tool that makes the workflow a breeze.”

All shows and performances are available on SVT Play website. They all come with the unique artistic touch of Robin and Fredrik, combining magic, poesy and perfect technical execution.

A unique Workflow

The production of this complex event took place in one of the highest end NEP OB-Van. The crew having used almost all the possible tools existing in LiveEdit workflow:

  • Timecode synchronizing the Producer Max.
  • Main and Backup Producer Max running in parallel.
  • 2 Media Players used to feed the program with fill and key overlays
  • All rehearsals have been recorded, proxies being automatically created and shared to all the crew.
  • Reviewing done in a special viewing room, using the "review" HD-SDI output, with the possibility to compare different takes.
  • Timeline enhanced during the "review meeting" to perfect each performance.
  • 12x tablets with Showtime App used by camera operators and stage crew during the show.
  • GPI outputs controlling Graphics
  • EVS’XT channels controlled via VDCP protocol

Collaboration as key element

Robin and Fredrik were not alone to create the show, they were backed by a very involved and creative crew:

Firstly, the Creative Director - Sacha Jean-Baptiste - and the Script-Girl directly edited the sequences thru LiveEdit timelines. The four persons being able to work simultaneously, and see instantly what the others did.

Many others also used LiveEdit as a paper cue sheets replacement. But LiveEdit does not only keep the sequences permanently up to date, it also progresses with the show, warning each person about what they should prepare in the next second. For instance, each camera operator sees the show progress and receives the instruction to prepare the next framing. The Vision Engineer also made a great use of the "Waterfall" view, knowing a light effect will be triggered soon and thus adjusting the camera settings beforehand in order to deliver a perfect quality picture.

For the Melodifestivalen, 12 tablets with Showtime App has been deployed and the "Waterfall" and "PGM+bug" outputs were distributed more than 20 times, putting LiveEdit at the core of both its creative preparation and its live performances.

Waterfall view, Showtime App and the Bug OSD + Review keyed over the program.

Congrats guys!

It is difficult to name each person who contributed to the success of that show, but at LiveEdit we would like to congratulate the entire team for this fantastic job, and thank all for the so useful feedback given all along those 6 weeks.
