Importing files in LiveEdit

LiveEdit provides flexible options for importing files into your project, ensuring seamless collaboration and compatibility with various workflows. Whether you're importing a LiveEdit XML or an Edit Decision List (EDL), this guide will walk you through each process step by step, providing helpful tips along the way.

Importing a LiveEdit Scene into Your Project

If you have received a LiveEdit XML file, importing it into your playlist is straightforward. This method allows you to integrate scenes created in other projects into your current work.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to the playlist where you wish to import the scene.
  2. In the menu bar, click File, then select Import LiveEdit XML.
  3. Choose the XML file you want to import and click OK.
  4. The imported scene will appear in your playlist with the tag “imported” added to its name.

Notes:

  • Imported scenes include all original tracks (Edit, Lyrics, Cues, Triggers, etc.), except media files, which must be imported separately.
  • Exporting a scene as XML is also a great way to create backups of specific scenes.

Importing an EDL into a LiveEdit Scene

An Edit Decision List (EDL) is commonly used in video editing workflows. With LiveEdit, you can import the Edit track from an EDL into an existing scene. This is ideal for workflows involving external video editing tools.

Important Pre-Requisite:

The EDL’s timecode must align with the timecode of your LiveEdit scene. If they differ, the imported elements will appear at the EDL’s original timecode, which may cause issues. Always request an EDL with a matching timecode for best results.

Steps:

  1. Open the LiveEdit scene where you want to import the EDL.
  2. Click the “+” icon in the toolbar to add tracks.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select Import from file….
  4. Choose the EDL file and click OK.
  5. The Edit track from the EDL will appear as a new track in your scene.

Notes:

  • If a dialog box warns you about invisible shots or incorrect timecodes, extend the scene’s duration or navigate to the imported elements to adjust.
  • Imported tracks retain basic transition data (e.g., cuts, mixes, wipes) but do not include effects or media files.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Imported elements are out of range: Check that the file’s timecode matches your scene’s timecode. Adjust the offset if needed.
  • Missing media files: Ensure media files are imported separately and linked manually, as they are not included in XML or EDL imports.
  • Invalid file format: Verify that the file meets LiveEdit’s requirements for the selected import type.
