Virtual tally and Previz' in LiveEdit

What is the virtual tally?

The tally is the red light on a camera that indicates it’s on-air. In LiveEdit, the virtual tally replicates this information and transmits it to your visualization tools. This allows you to see in real time, within a 3D environment, which source is on-air. It’s a key tool for preparing shows, visualising camera framing alongside encoded lighting, and ensuring consistency before going live.

Example use case: during pre-production, the director and lighting designer use the virtual tally to visualise camera positions and lighting design together, ensuring both worlds blend seamlessly before rehearsals begin.

Requirements

Before you start (this applies to both Windows and Mac environments), make sure:

  • Your computer running LiveEdit is connected to the visualization system.
  • You can ping the IP address of your visualization tool. If your computer can’t reach it, LiveEdit won’t be able to either.

⚠️ Network connectivity is the most common source of issues. Always check your connection before configuring LiveEdit.

1. Accessing the Virtual Tally settings

  1. Open LiveEdit.
  2. Click on the Settings ⚙️ icon in the left sidebar.
  3. In the tabs, select Tally.

2. Choosing and configuring your protocol

Capture

  • Enter the IP address of the machine running Capture.
  • Default port is 4004.

Example: IP: 192.168.1.50 / Port: 4004

Disguise (Art-Net)

  • Enter the IP address of the Disguise server.
  • Port: 6454 (default).
  • Choose the Art-Net universe and channel. The channel value will indicate the active source (from 1 to 255).

Generic Art-Net

  • IP address and port (default 6454).
  • Select the universe.
  • Channels (1 to 512) will show which source is on-air: 100% when the camera is live, 0% when not.

📚 For more details, refer to the official documentation of Capture.seArt-Net, or Disguise

3. Select the track to emulate

Finally, choose the Edit track you want to emulate within the same settings tab.

Tip: By default Edit 1 is the top track in your scene.

Best practices

✅ Assign static IP addresses to your visualization devices.
✅ If communication issues arise, check network firewalls, IP conflicts, and test using other devices to isolate the problem.
✅ Always test communication with a ping before launching LiveEdit.
✅ Don’t change default ports unless necessary.
✅ If using multiple Art-Net universes, keep your patch organized to avoid confusion.
